Bluebirds are very distinctive and welcome visitors to gardens and yards. Having bluebird houses can be very helpful if you would like to see these very colorful birds. The eastern male bluebird has a bright velvety blue back and head with brick red on its breast with white below. The female eastern bluebird has a paler version of the male. These birds love handcrafted bluebird houses placed at the edge of a garden or field. Females lay 4 to 5 pale blue eggs, and will incubate them for approximately two weeks. It is common for bluebirds to raise two broods per year.

They will line their bluebird houses with a loose mesh of grasses. Both sexes will feed the young hatched birds for approximately three weeks until they are old enough to fly on their own. The diet of the bluebird is mainly insects. They do eat from feeders to collect fruit, mealworms, or berries.

The other versions of bluebird are the mountain bluebird, and the western bluebird. The western bluebird has an extra patch of brick red between its shoulders. The mountain bluebird has a light blue or powder blue breast with a white belly. Their back is all blue. Mountain bluebirds will use the same type of nest box that an eastern bluebird would be attracted to.  Overcrowding by starlings and house sparrows has made life difficult for bluebirds in fighting for nest sites. Because of this fact, bluebird houses are much needed, and a welcome sight for bluebirds.
